On February 3, 2020 the Department of Economics organized the 12th edition of the Young Economist Competition. The competition is the annual Undergraduate National level research presentation conference. The theme for this year’s edition was “Sustainable Economic Development: Emerging issues in India”. Being an extremely important and relevant topic to the present scenario, the Department received a great response from all across India. After a methodical scrutiny by a panel of experts, 8 papers were chosen for the presentation round.

The event was inaugurated with lighting of the lamp to invoke God’s blessings. Dr. Laxmi Rajkumari, faculty coordinator, welcomed the gathering followed by introductory remarks by Dr. Joshy K J, Head of Department.Dr. Tony Sam George, Dean Social sciences inspired the young minds by instilling a rigor for researchin the minds of budding scholars through his Presidential address. The chief guests for the day were Dr. Malini Tantri, Assistant Professor at Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC)and Dr. Leena Nair, Head of Department at Jyothi Nivas College.

The participants presented papers on a diverse range of topics under the theme. These subthemes included: Issues faced in tourism, Sectoral Labor productivity, Linking Economics development with Electoral outcomes and Habitable conditions of Delhi to name a few. Cash prizes were given to the three winning teams. There was also a bonus quiz round for the audience pertaining to the current issues from across the globe.

The event concluded by the felicitation ceremony by the chief guests and Dr. Joshy KJ. To render gratitude on behalf of the Department, Dr. Gerard Rassendran delivered the Vote of Thanks.
“The future belongs to the curious. The ones who are not afraid to explore it, question it and turn it inside out.” On this empowering and promising note, the Young Economist Competition 2020 was wrapped up until the following year.
